SFV – Swedish for Healthcare Professionals

SFV is a qualified language education for those who have an equivalent education as nursing assistants. Alongside the language education, you will receive training in understanding and knowledge of how Swedish laws and regulations function, as well as other important knowledge about healthcare and elderly care work in Swedish society. The education includes workplace training and one or more vocational courses at a secondary school level.

The purpose of the education is to help you, as an equivalent nursing assistant from another country, develop your Swedish language skills and become employable in the job market, as well as have the opportunity to pursue further studies.

Who can apply?

You need to have an education in healthcare at a minimum secondary school level that is equivalent to the Swedish nursing assistant education. We recommend that you have applied or will apply for an assessment of your educational documentation from the Swedish Council for Higher Education (Universitets- och högskolerådet, UHR). If you have sent your educational documentation to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) for assessment, please also include this.

How do I apply?

You apply online. Fill out and print the application form and submit it to the Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) center or the Adult Education (Komvux) center in your municipality. Also, attach a copy of your grades in Swedish as a Second Language (SFI/SVA).

Course content

Mandatory courses:

• Swedish as a Second Language with a focus on healthcare from SFI level C to Swedish as a Second Language basic course 4.
  There is also the possibility to study Swedish as a Second Language 1 and 2.
  Course description: You start at your current level of knowledge. In addition to providing a linguistic foundation, the Swedish language is adapted for working as a nursing assistant. The instruction aims to build a large vocabulary that can be used within the healthcare industry, especially in the nursing assistant profession. The courses conclude with a certificate or grade. The courses are offered during daytime.
  
• Nursing 1 and 2
  
• Workplace training (APL) of 4 weeks is included in combination with the Nursing courses.
  

The education also includes:

• Study visits
  
• Lectures by external speakers from the healthcare industry
  
• Networking for contacts within the healthcare industry
  
• Civic studies with a focus on how the nursing assistant profession functions in Sweden and what governs and influences it
  
• Special educational support
  
• Support in digital competence
  
• Guidance for continued professional development, for example, towards the nursing profession
  

Elective courses:

In consultation with the healthcare teachers, it may be possible to study other vocational courses in addition to Nursing 1 and 2. This is determined based on individual needs.
